Makes 4 patties

INGREDIENTS

For The Patties:

  • 1 block (8 oz / 225g) tempeh, crumbled
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or rolled oats)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (plus extra for cooking)
  • 1 tbsp ketchup or tomato paste
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For Serving:

  • Burger buns
  • Toppings: lettuce, tomato, onion, etc.
  • Condiments: ketchup, mustard, vegan mayonnaise, or your favorite sauce

INSTRUCTIONS

Cook the Tempeh:

  • Crumble the tempeh into small pieces using your hands or a fork.
  • Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the crumbled tempeh and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned.

Mix the Ingredients:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked tempeh, breadcrumbs, onion, soy sauce, ketchup, smoked paprika, and black pepper.
  • Mix well until everything is evenly combined.

Form the Patties:

  • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties (about 1/2-inch thick).

Cook the Patties:

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a drizzle of olive oil.
  • Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.

Assemble the Burgers:

  • Toast the burger buns if desired.
